The Bund外灘

The Bund is one of the most recognizable architectural symbols of Shanghai. The word ‘bund’ derives from an Anglo-Indian word for an embankment along a muddy waterfront and that is what it was in the beginning, when the first British company opened an office there in 1846. Located on the west bank of a bend in the Huangpu River, the Bund became the site of some of the earliest foreign settlements after Shanghai was opened as one of five “Treaty Ports” in the Treaty of Nanjing that ended the Opium war in 1842. Because of its proximity to the “Yangtze River–the path into central China, Shanghai grew rapidly as the economic centre of foreign interests. Many buildings, constructed in various foreign styles, are well preserved in the Bund area, and western tourists will feel a sense of familiarity when strolling around the long street, which resembles those in European cities. This blending of eastern and western styles has given the Bund a reputation as a “World’s Fair of Architecture”.

 Shanghai上海

Shanghai, called “Hu” for short, is a bustling metropolis located at the mouth of the Yangtze River. Connected with Jiangsu and zhejiang provinces in the west, the city is exposed to the East China Sea in the east. With a total area of 6,341 square kilometers (about 2,448 square miles) and a population of more than 13million, Shanghai takes its place among the world’s biggest, most vibrant urban areas. Shanghai also enjoys a delightful climate with four distinct seasons. Spring and autumn, with their moderate temperature, are the best times to visit Shanghai. While the city epitomises modern, urban china, its history is one of its most intriguing features. In particular, in the 1930s and 40s, Shanghai was a paradise for adventurers. Tycoons, millionaires and great beauties came to this attractive city to realize their dreams, and countless moving stories, both sad and joyful, were played out here.

Mudu Ancient Town

Mudu is an ancient landscape water town located to the southwest of the Suzhou City. Surrounded by groups of hills and next to Taihu Lake, it has beautiful natural scenery and abundant natural resources. It now covers about 34.5 square kilometers (about 13.32 square miles). With a history more than 2,500 years long, Mudu has witnessed the rise and fall of many dynasties and it is also endowed with plentiful cultural connotations. This is a traditional town and has typical landscape gardens, small rivers and bridges.

The Name ‘Mudu’ is derived from a story about Xishi, one of the Four Beauties in Chinese history. It is said in the Spring and Autumn Period (773BC-476BC), Fuchai, the king of Wu, obliged workers to build a Guanwa Palace in order to please the Beauty Xishi. Then, considerable wood was carried here so that the river in this area was blocked. This was called’jimusedu’ (which means the accumulated wood blocks the river). So, the town was named ‘Mudu’. In the past thousand of years, Mudu has produced many outstanding scholars and wealthy businessmen. Some of their former residences have now become popular sights.

DSCN8647r DSCN8648r DSCN8649r DSCN8651r DSCN8656r DSCN8659r DSCN8662r DSCN8671r DSCN8680r DSCN8686r DSCN8692r DSCN8693r

Tiger Hill

Tiger Hill (Hu Qiu) is the most famous sight of Suzhou, with old trees and cultural relics everywhere – the Sword Testing Stone, the Broken Beam Hall, the Thousand Men Rock, the Sword Pond, etc. The millennium-old Yunyan Pagoda, also known as the Leaning Tower, stands on top of the hill and is regarded as the symbol of Suzhou. “It’s a pity of a lifetime if you have been to Suzhou but missed the Tiger Hill,” said Su Shi, the Song Poet. Tiger Hill is 36 meters high and is set in a 20-hectare park. Near the top of the hill is the burial place of the founding father of Suzhou, King He Lu, who died in 600 B.C. It was said that a white tiger occasionally appeared to guard the tomb; hence the name for the hill.

Hanshan Temple

Hanshan Temple, literally “Cold Mountain Temple”, is a Buddhist temple and monastery in Suzhou, China. It is located at the town of Fengqiao (lit. Maple Bridge), about 5 kilometres west of the old city of Suzhou. Traditionally, Hanshan Temple is believed to have been founded during the Tianjian era (502–519) of the reign of Emperor Wu of Liang, in the Southern and Northern Dynasties period. The current name of the monastery derives from Hanshan, the legendary monk and poet. Hanshan and his disciple Shide are said to have come to the monastery during the reign of Emperor Taizong of Tang (627–649), where Hanshan became the abbot.

The Bell

Two bells are currently used at Hanshan Temple, both dating from the late Qing Dynasty when the temple was last rebuilt. One was forged in China in 1906, and the other was forged in Japan at around the same time. The dedication on the bell was written by Japanese Prime Minister Itō Hirobumi. The original Tang Dynasty bell is believed by some (including Itō Hirobumi and modern Chinese statesman Kang Youwei) to have been taken to Japan in ancient times. These two factors have roused some nationalistic controversy among Chinese and Koreans (see, for example, this opinion).

A new 108 tonne bell commissioned by Hanshan Temple and built by a foundry in Wuhan was completed recently, and is on its way to Hanshan Temple to replace the hundred years old Japanese built bell. The new bell is 8.5 metres high and 5.2 metres in diameter at its widest.

The Famous Poem

Hanshan Temple is famed in East Asia because of the poem “A Night Mooring by Maple Bridge” (枫桥夜泊), by Tang Dynasty poet, Zhang Ji. The poem describes the melancholy scene of a dejected traveller, moored at night at

Fengqiao, hearing the bells of Hanshan Temple:

QE is an enthusiastic and outspoken pupil. He speaks well and confidently. He is able to connect new knowledge to prior experience and works with others to meet the group’s goals. He takes the initiative to help his peers. He is encouraged to be more conscientious in his work to ensure quality and consistency.

DSCN0352r

Language Arts

QX possess good self-discipline. Her daily assignments are always completed in a timely manner. She also gets along well with others in the classroom. She is making a better progress reading sight words. Her spelling scores have improved greatly since the beginning of the school year. With her continued effort, she will receive much satisfaction from her work.

Math Concepts

QX has matured nicely this year, both academically and socially. She is very cooperative in class, works independently and stays on task. She has no difficulty retaining math processes of addition and subtraction. She can also recognise numbers and read number words. She has improved her counting skills. I hope this effort and attitude will carry over into the next semester.
